The experience
A day trip to explore Grande Terre, on Saturdays and Sundays. A leading figure in the region and in local tourism, your guide – a native of Guadeloupe – is the best person for the job! On the programme: visits to places of interest, anecdotes, encounters with locals and a great atmosphere. What better way to explore a country than with a local guide! Your guide, with a strong personality – just like the wonderfully generous and cheerful women of the Caribbean – will take you on a journey of discovery through her region, sharing anecdotes with a smile, as you explore the island she is passionate about and knows like the back of her hand.
Departure from Saint-François at 7.30 am or from Sainte-Anne at 7.45 am, from your holiday accommodation. You’ll set off for Pointe des Châteaux, one of Guadeloupe’s top tourist attractions thanks to its extraordinary views and the stunning beauty of the surroundings. On the road to Le Moule, you’ll stop at the Maison Zévallos, known as ‘the haunted house’, a former residence and fine example of colonial architecture. Once you arrive in Le Moule, you’ll visit the world-renowned Damoiseau distillery, where a short tasting session is included.
You’ll then set off again through the sugar cane fields towards Anse-Bertrand, in the north of Grande Terre, where the cliffs of Pointe de la Grande Vigie await you: a panoramic view of the sea and immense cliffs, worthy of those in Normandy. You’ll then head to the Porte d’Enfer, a stunning cove where you can admire the cliffs up close, as well as ‘Tou a Man Coco’, a legendary spot. Allow €20 for lunch in Anse-Bertrand or Port-Louis (red or rosé wine included), unless you prefer to choose a restaurant of your own choosing or opt for a ‘roadside’ sandwich meal.
After lunch, there’ll be a beach break with the chance to swim at the magnificent Souffleur beach in Port-Louis. On the way back, there’ll be some historical stops: a visit to the slave market in Petit-Canal, followed by the incredible ‘domino’ cemetery in Morne-à-l’Eau, before setting off again along the steep Grands Fonds road, an unbroken succession of hills, each more impressive than the last. A final stop is planned at the market or the craft village of Sainte-Anne, before returning to your accommodation between 5.30 pm and 6 pm. Having arrived in the morning full of curiosity, you’ll leave in the evening having fallen in love with this wonderfully rich land!
