Departing from Baie Mahault: a day-long cruise with a Creole meal in the Grand-Cul-de-Sac-Marin Nature Reserve, departing from Gosier and travelling up the Rivière Salée. Your boat, a ‘cigarette’ (2 x 150cv), will take you past mangrove islets to some idyllic little islands. Discover the flora and fauna, and take a swim in one of the largest lagoons in the Lesser Antilles, set against the backdrop of the 25-kilometre-long Great Barrier Reef.
At 7.30 am, you’ll meet at the excursion departure point at Baie-Mahault harbour or in Gosier at 8.15 am, depending on your chosen package. Head for the white-sand islets of Grand Cul-de-Sac, passing through mangrove islets. You’ll be amazed by the mangrove forest, formed by the aerial roots of red mangroves intertwined with one another. The ecosystem here is truly unusual and unique. At around 10.30 am, we’ll stop at Îlet aux Oiseaux to observe frigatebirds, pelicans and herons. At 11.00 am, you’ll enter the Îlet Fajou Nature Reserve, designated by the Guadeloupe National Park. You’ll then have an hour to swim with a mask and snorkel. You’ll discover the underwater flora and fauna, particularly the seagrass beds and starfish. Around 11.30 am, there’ll be a swimming stop at Îlet Caret, where you’ll be served a Marigalantais ti’punch. At 12.30 pm, a planteur aperitif or a local juice accompanied by fresh fruit and toast, followed by a meal of ‘homemade’ local specialities made with market-fresh produce, will be served on Îlet la Biche. Your Creole meal: chicken colombo, fish skewers and ouassous prawn skewers, served with a gratin of local vegetables and rice. For dessert, you’ll be served bananas in chocolate flambéed with rum, along with a coffee followed by ‘Mum’s’ rum punch. Other drinks are available: still water, red wine and rosé. After the BBQ, you’ll have some quiet time to either take a restorative nap or relax and sunbathe by the crystal-clear waters of the lagoon – unless you’d prefer a swim in this idyllic setting. At 3.30 pm, you’ll set off at a leisurely pace for the return journey to the port of Baie Mahault or Gosier.

The tour was one the best we had on our cruise ship around the caribbean. The food and rum was very tasty and helped us to recover for snorkeling around the coral reefs of Gran Cul de Sac Marin. One of the highlights of the tour was the possibility of snorkeling around the shipreck, easily accesible. Special thanks to Lucas and Fiona.
