A day of snorkelling, islets and mangroves – Grand Cul-de-Sac

An unusual excursion that will take you from Petit Cul-de-Sac Marin to Grand Cul-de-Sac Marin, via the mangrove swamp of the Salée River. This all-inclusive day trip, featuring a barbecue lunch, will allow you to discover the islets and unspoilt areas of this magnificent region. With Brice at the helm – an enthusiast who knows the Grand Cul-de-Sac like the back of his hand, and whose boat can go anywhere – you won’t be disappointed!

Meet at 7.45 am at the Bas-du-Fort marina to board this Neptune-class barge. After a few quick preparations, we’ll weigh anchor and set off at 8.00 am sharp! We won’t be wasting any time as the day’s programme is packed! From the very first few kilometres of the trip, you’ll be in for a treat. After a few minutes’ sailing, you’ll head down the Salée River to admire its mangroves. Brice will be delighted to explain the workings of this fascinating ecosystem. You’ll then emerge into the Grand Cul-de-Sac Marin and head for the shipwreck – one of the reserve’s best diving spots – for a short snorkelling session. The exceptionally clear water will allow you to easily spot the many species of fish that have made their home in the wreck of a ship lying just a few centimetres below the water’s surface. You’ll then head to the coral reef for another snorkelling session surrounded by colourful fish. After this first, already action-packed part of the day, it’s time for a short break to recharge your batteries for what lies ahead. The captain will serve you an aperitif on board the boat, consisting of planteur, ti-punch, a selection of juices and peanuts. Once you’ve had a drink, we’ll carry on with a visit to Îlet La Biche, another of the Grand Cul-de-Sac Marin’s attractions: a cluster of semi-submerged mangrove islets right in the middle of the lagoon. It is in this unique setting that you’ll have lunch. The boat will drop anchor there so you can enjoy a delicious barbecue meal whilst taking in the exceptional views. On the menu: @@Raw vegetable starter @@Fish skewers with curry and coconut milk @@Plain skewers @@Side dishes: white rice, plantain, Caribbean-style rice salad @@Local fruit Once you’ve digested your meal, it’s time to set off on the final leg of this excursion. You’ll round off your day with a stop at the iconic Îlet Caret. Even without coconut palms, it remains a little corner of paradise with its white sandy beach and shallow, crystal-clear waters. You’ll stop for a swim at Îlet Caret before heading back (arriving at the Bas-du-Fort marina around 4 pm).
