Half-day – Îlet-Caret and the mangrove forest

From Sainte-Rose, discover the riches of the Grand Cul-de-sac Marin. On the programme for this half-day trip: idyllic islets including Îlet Caret, the coral reef, Îlet aux Oiseaux, and an explanation of the mangrove ecosystem, all accompanied by a light snack (drinks included). There are two departure times to choose from: 8.30 am or 12.30 pm. Meet next to the water sports centre on the Sainte-Rose seafront, in the large car park at 8.15 am or 12.15 pm. Departure at 8.30 am or 12.30 pm, depending on your choice, heading for the Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Sainte-Rose. The crossing takes 15 minutes. At 8.45 am or 12.45 pm, you’ll arrive at the 25-kilometre-long coral reef that protects one of the largest lagoons in the Lesser Antilles. For an hour, you’ll explore the underwater flora and fauna: the ‘parrot’ and ‘surgeon’ fish that swim amongst the ‘Neptune’s brain’ corals and the so-called ‘fire’ corals, as well as the graceful gorgonians. You may be lucky enough to spot a turtle or a lobster hiding amongst the rocks.

At around 10.30 am or 3.00 pm, you’ll have some quiet time to explore Ilet Caret, a little hidden paradise of white sand amidst expanses of crystal-clear water. You’ll enjoy a safe swim in the lagoon before savouring a local drink – ti’punch, planteur or local fruit juice – accompanied by a light snack.

At around 11.30 am or 3.45 pm, you’ll set off to explore the mangrove forest, where your guide will explain this unique ecosystem, which is so vital to the balance and development of life in the lagoon. Please be respectful!

At 12.15 pm or 4.15 pm, you’ll discover Ilet aux Oiseaux, an islet of red mangroves with magnificent and impressive aerial roots, which has become the permanent home of frigatebirds, pelicans and herons. You’ll then enjoy watching the frigatebirds—majestic creatures—soar through the air before returning to port at 12.30 pm or 4.30 pm.
