Basse-Terre & la Soufrière

The archipelago’s natural side: the Soufrière volcano, the leeward coast and the south of Basse-Terre. We offer few excursions that strictly ‘depart from Basse-Terre’: depending on what you fancy, it’s best to head for the right area.

Why visit the Basse-Terre side?

In Basse-Terre, it is Guadeloupe’s natural beauty that people come to experience. With its volcano, waterfalls, tropical rainforest and black-sand beaches, the landscapes are very different from the white-sand beaches of Grande-Terre, but just as breathtaking.

The Soufrière volcano
The highest point in the Lesser Antilles and its forested massif, in the heart of the National Park.
The leeward coast
The sea is often calm, making it ideal for snorkelling and diving around Bouillante.
A gateway to the islands
The south of Basse-Terre also provides access to Les Saintes, depending on how the trip is organised.

Good to know before you go

Rainforest
The more humid climate means there is lush vegetation all year round.
Waterfalls
Several waterfalls can be reached via short flights of steps through the woodland.
Weather
A shower is a common occurrence and part of the forest’s charm, and clouds are often present at the summit of the volcano.
Journey time
The hilly terrain makes journeys take longer: allow plenty of time.
National park
A large part of the area is designated as a national park.
Equipment
Hiking or trainers are essential. The path is often damp and slippery.
Guided tour
To get as close as possible to the fumaroles at La Soufrière whilst staying safe, hire a mountain guide.
Water
Make sure you take enough water with you – there are no water points along the route.
Effort
The climb up La Soufrière requires a good level of fitness.
Les Bains Jaunes
At the foot of La Soufrière, stop off at Les Bains Jaunes to enjoy this naturally warm pool.
