Petite-Terre leaves a lasting impression on travellers. It is an unspoilt, peaceful yet vibrant world — a paradise on earth. Here are five reasons to fall in love with this little hidden gem.

1. The discovery of an (almost) deserted island

The unspoilt wilderness of Petite-Terre

Petite-Terre functions as an ecological sanctuary with strictly regulated access: no hotels, no restaurants, no roads. The site is home to sea turtles, rays, colourful fish and harmless lemon sharks. Visitors can explore fine sandy beaches fringed with coconut palms and hike up to the lighthouse whilst spotting iguanas native to the Lesser Antilles.

2. Swimming amongst colourful fish (and lemon sharks)

Snorkelling reveals blue surgeonfish, lemon sharks observed from a reasonable distance, and turtles feeding in the seagrass beds. The experience focuses on respectful observation, without disturbing the wildlife.

3. Watch the iguanas as if they were village cats

Iguanas are everywhere on the island — on the footpaths, in the trees, near the picnic areas. Visitors learn to respect them and observe them without disturbing them; their size varies considerably from one individual to another.

4. Enjoy the experience at your own pace

Speedboat: maximises the time spent on the island, but can be physically demanding during the winter months (January to April).

Catamaran: a relaxing experience, with meals on board and sunset departures — an experience described as peaceful and contemplative.

5. A rare break from it all

The limited transport network and minimal infrastructure allow visitors to reconnect with the rhythm of nature.

Practical advice

  • Book early, particularly between December and April
  • Wear a UV-protective T-shirt to protect yourself from the sun and the reef
  • Don’t leave any rubbish behind
  • Make sure you bring water shoes for exploring rocky areas
  • Keep your eyes peeled: there’s always something to look at

Petite-Terre is, above all, an experience — characterised by simplicity, intensity and beauty, and ideal for reconnecting with nature.
