Marie-Galante is the ideal destination for those seeking a quieter, more authentic side of Guadeloupe, far from the crowds. The island combines natural beauty, warm hospitality and exceptional scenery.
1. Go for a swim at one of the archipelago’s most beautiful beaches

- Anse Canot: a top spot for snorkelling (crystal-clear water, coral, fish)
- Anse Mays: peaceful, with shaded huts
- Vieux-Fort Beach: unspoilt, ideal for photography and picnics
- La Feuillère Beach (Capesterre): nearby restaurants, views of kitesurfers
2. Visit a rum distillery (and sample some agricultural rum)

- Bellevue: a comprehensive tour of the estate, with stunning views over the sugarcane fields
- Bielle: artisan distillery, exceptional cask-strength rums
- Labat: a rustic atmosphere, strong and aromatic rums
3. Admire the Gueule Grand Gouffre

This spectacular natural site is a cavity carved out of the cliff by the sea, forming a rocky arch over turquoise waters. It can be reached by car and then via a well-maintained footpath — a visit is recommended in the morning or late afternoon.
4. Discover a unique historical heritage

Marie-Galante is nicknamed ‘the island of a hundred mills’: 72 mills still stand today, bearing witness to its sugar-producing past. Habitation Murat, a former sugar mill converted into an eco-museum, preserves traces of this history through its factory chimneys, stone buildings and sugarcane plantations. Hiring a car allows you to explore the island at your own pace.
5. Go for a walk on the Grande Galette

- Grande Ravine Trail (Capesterre): cliffs, hidden coves, lush vegetation
- Gueule Grand Gouffre at Vieux-Fort: a kilometre-long stretch of unspoilt coastline
- Murat Trail: a circular walk taking in the mill, the old house and the Creole garden
Tips: make sure you wear suitable footwear, take a hat and some water, and respect the peace and quiet of the area.
