Details of activities in Vieux Fort
Historically an outpost for the observation and defence of the region against the English, the town’s motto is “Welcoming, tolerant, friendly”. On the famous Vieux-Fort headland, a magnificent and imposing white lighthouse – well known to sailors – majestically welcomes passing visitors and marks the entrance to the harbour of Basse-Terre. Anse Dupuy is a small fishing port, the departure point for local fishermen heading out to catch tuna and sea bream. The hills above Vieux-Fort are the well-known starting point for several walks, including those through the Caribbean Mountains – which predate La Soufrière and rise to over 650 metres – and the long-distance walking trail. Vieux-Fort has been renowned for the skill of its embroiderers for 300 years. An embroidery centre is open to the public within the ruins of Fort de l’Olive, showcasing delicate creations of traditional lace.
